‘cyber prostitution’ Increase In Africa

An increasing number of young girls in many African countries have become cyber prostitutes. Many
have given up traditional prostitution in bars, nightclubs or hotels, and prefer online methods which are less risky, more profitable and more discrete.

Social media platforms are increasingly used by prostitutes and are especially popular among
African students. Moreover, smartphones sales have dramatically increased in the last few
years, expanding the marketplace for online prostitution.

Consumption of adult content on mobile phones is expected increase
by 30 percent worldwide by 2017.
But young and well-connected prostitutes are not the only ones who take advantage of this internet revolution on the continent. Many
prostitution networks are increasingly structured and focused on new technologies. They even
own well-equipped apartments where girls work and then post the video online, inviting potential
clients to meet them there.
